Died, at her home in Jefferson township,
on Monday, September
4th, 1893, after a lingering
illness. Mrs. J. Platt, aged 51 years.
The deceased was born in July 1842.
in Ripley county, Indiana, and came
to Iowa with her parents, J. H. Ross
and wife in 1854, settling in Oran
township, where the most of life was
spent. She was married to Mr. Plait
at the beginning of the war of the rebellion,
and they began housekeeping
on a farm not far from the parental
homestead. When the husband felt
the call of his country and marched
away with the boys in blue she kissed
him a fond good bye and with a fervent
God speed bade him go while
she did the best she could during his
absence, and when he returned gave
him a loving welcome. Their union
was blessed with four children three
of which are living, and together will
the husband sincerely mourn the loss
of her who for so many years had
been their counselor and loving companion.
The deceased had been in
poor health for the past eleven years
and for the past two years had been a
constant sufferer with cancer of the
breast, which finally caused her death.
The funeral services were held Wednesday
afternoon in the grove near
the Oran school house, and was the
most largely attended of any ever held
in the township, there being seventy-five
teams in the procession which
wound its way to the silent city of the
dead, Oran cemetery, where the
remains were laid to rest. She had for
many years been a member of the regular
Baptist church, and the funeral
services were conducted by a former
pastor, Elder James Abbott, who now
resides at Jordan's Grove.Oelwein Register - 7 Sept 1893
