The death of Mrs. Carl Thorman Thursday, July 22,
this county loses another of its early pioneers. Her
maiden name was Minna Schmidt and she was born
in Weomar, Germany on the 27th of June, 1837. In
1855 she came to America and took up her
residence in Fayette County, Iowa. Here she was
united in marriage with Carl Thorman in January 1858
and here she has spent her long life caring for her
home and children and helping to build the institutions
of this great commonwealth. Four children were born to
Mr. and Mrs. Thorman, three of whom survive the
death of the mother. The older son, Hugo, died
August 24, 1888 and Mr. Thorman passed away July 24,
1904. Besides the daughter Minnie and two sons
Charles and Adolf, two sisters remain to cherish the
memory of this mother and sister. They are Mrs. Emma
Oelwein of this city and Mrs. Mary Thorman of Elgin,
Nebraska.
Funeral services were conducted at the late home, five
miles northwest of Oelwein on Saturday afternoon. Dr.
W. C. Cleworth of the Grace Methodist church officiating.
Interment was made in the family lot in the old
cemetery.
