Mrs. Anna Hicks Hawkey was born in Cornwall,
England, July 16, 1820. She was a daughter of
Thomas and Anna Hicks and an aunt of Rev.
Edmund Wane Hicks, a Baptist minister of
Chicago. At the age of 24 she was united in
marriage to Daniel Hawkey, a wealty farmer's
son. In 1845 they came to the United States and
settled near Rockford, Illinois, where they
remained eight years. In 1853 they removed to
Maquoketa, Iowa.
In the year of 1862 death entered the family
taking her youngest son, Dannie, at the age of
five years. In 1864 the father followed the son
to the grave and the mother was alone. In 1867
she was united in marriage to John Burton with
whom she lived until her death.
Her health had been gradually failing for the
past five years. Three months ago they removed
from Maquoketa to Oelwein. She was apparently
as well as usual until one week ago, but was then
taken suddenly ill and the morning of July 10th
the angle of death laid hold of her and she
passed from earthly cares to heavenly peace. She
was 74 years, 11 months and 25 days old at the
time of her death.
She leaves a husband, one daughter and son to
mourn her loss, they being Mrs. George Stebbins
of Oelwein and Thomas Hawkey of Nashville, MO,
eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mrs. Burton leaves many friends at Maquoketa and
many new ones that she has gained during her
short stay in Oelwein.
