Philip T. Derflinger was born in Ohio on February 7, 1850.
He removed to Iowa, settling near this place, from which
place he migrated to Dakota in 1888, taking up his
residence in St. Lawrence, South Dakota. He was one of
Hand county's pioneer settlers and braved the trials and
vicissitudes of western life, always taking an active part
in helping do what he could in furthering the interests
of his town and country.

He had been a sufferer for a number of years from
asthmatic bronchitis, death relieved him of his pains on
December 9th. He leaves a wife and four small children
to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and
father.

Deceased was member and active worker in the Masonic
and A. O. U. W. Lodges.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. I. B. Sevy,
pastor of the M. E. church, at the home of the deceased,
at St. Lawrence on Sunday, December 13, 1896 at about
10 o'clock AM, where a large concourse of sympathizing
friends gathered to pay their respects to one of their
honored and respected citizens, mingling their tears
with the those of the bereft family.

The remains were laid to rest in the I. O. O. F. cemetery
north of town.
