John P. Lennon Sr. 1836-1922

J. P. Lennon passed away at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Percy Butler at Marshalltown,
where he had resided since the death of his
wife four years ago.

Mr. Lennon was born in Belfast, Ireland,
June 17, 1836, being 85 years, 10 months, of
age at his death.

Mr. Lennon came to this country at the age of
14 years and settled in Dubuque county where
he engaged in farming. He was united in marriage
to Miss Maggie Kirby in 1857, there being thirteen
children from this union. Twelve children, six
boys and six girls are left to mourn his loss; Ed
Lennon, Manley; E. O. of Aurora; J. P. of Oelwein;
J. M. of Marcus; N. W. of Aurora; J. H. Bernard; Mrs.
Coselman, Oelwein; Mrs. Butler, Marshalltown; Mrs.
C. P. McLaughlin, St. Paul; Mrs. McBride, Tacoma,
Wash.; Mrs. Schmillen, Council Bluffs; and Mrs.
Skiels of Fayette.

In the year 1873 he moved to Fayette county
owning a farm one mile north of Westgate where
he lived until 1898 when he moved to Oelwein
where he resided until four years ago when he
moved with his daughter to Marshalltown.

The remains were brought to Oelwein and
buried from the Sacred Heart Church in Woodlawn
cemetery, Wednesday, the six sons acting as pall
bearers. There was a large attendance of relatives
and friends at the last service.
