E. B. Conklin, whose serious illness
we chronicled two weeks ago, died at
his home southeast of town last Saturday,
from an attack of peritonitis.
Deceased was born at Baiston Spa.,
Saratoga county, New York. January
1, 1820. He was the youngest of five
children. His brother, who resides
in Cattaraugus county, New York,
and one sister, Mrs. Hannah Tripp, of
Michigan, survive him, At the age
of five years he removed with his parents
to Genesec county, New York,
into what was then a wilderness, and
the remaining years of his boyhood
and youth were passed in assisting to
clear the land and make a new home.
At the age of twenty-one he went
with his brother as an apprentice to
learn wagon-making, where after having
learned the trade he remained and
worked twenty-two years. December
9, 1848, he was married to Miss Julia
Rathbone, of Castile, Wyoming county,
New York, who survives him. In
1863 they came to Iowa and settled
on a farm near Cedar Falls. In October,
1868, he came to Fayette county
and purchased the farm where he
resided until the time of his death.
He was highly respected and has long
been considered one of Fayette county's
best farmers. In politics he has always
been a staunch republican and
always kept himself well posted in all
the principal topics of the day. Mrs.
Conklin has the sympathy of all in
her affliction. For nearly forty-five
years they have journeyed along life's
pathway together, united in both hand
and heart. Never having had any
children they have been all in all to
each other, which makes her loss the
more deeply felt. The happiness of
the other has always seemed uppermost
in the mind of each. For some
years Mr. Conklin has been in feeble
health and the constancy and devotion
of his faithful wife has won the admiration
of all. Being as he was,
broken in health, be fell an easy victim
to the dread ailment peritonitis.
By industry, integrity and economy
he has amassed a nice property, which
being left solely to the widow enables
her to enjoy all the comforts that
money can obtain. The funeral services
were held at the residence and
were largely attended. There were
eighty-four teams at the cemetery.
Beautiful floral offerings were bestowed
by friends. Elder Ellingwood,
who has been his friend from boyhood,
conducted the service.
