Hattie Erdman, third child of Henry and Mary A.
Erdman's family of four children was born Oct. 16,
1864 on a farm near the little village of Coytown
in Buchanan County, Iowa.

Here she grew to womanhood and the farm was her
possession at the time of her death, Oct. 5, 1943,
having been continuously in the family. Miss Erdman
mother died when the oldest child was but twelve
years of age leaving the little family to the tender
care of the brave young father who kept the family
together staunchly assisted by the oldest child Cyrene.
Hattie received her education in the rural school of
the district and the U. I. U. of Fayette. She chose as
her vocation the profession of teacher and many are
the successful men and women who received their
inspiration from her precept and example.

In later years failing health compelled her to give up
her beloved work and she with her sister came to
Oelwein, establishing a home at 319 1st Street, NE,
where she continued to live to the end of her life.
Coming to this city she opened an insurance office
where she worked successfully until 1932 when her
sister died and she gave up her business that she
might make a home for her widowed younger brother.

Some two years later he died leaving his sister alone,
the last survivor of a loved family.

She is missed by a large circle of close friends. No
close relatives survive. A niece, Mrs. Ora Newland at
Brownsville, Oregon and four cousins, one of whom,
Mrs. Mary Porter of Independence, has tenderly cared
for her the past four weeks.

Dr. L. W. Hauter officiated at the funeral service held
Thursday afternoon in the Hintz Funeral Home.
Casket bearers were R. Lloyd Young, A. W. Stewart,
Chas. Payton, J. B. Henderson, Chas. Mettlin and Ralph
Sprague. Burial was in Otsego Cemetery.
