Martin Van Buren Dibble was born
in 1840 in Chautauqua county, N. Y.
The family moved in 1849 to Rock
county, Wis., and thence in 1853 to
Clermont, where the son George had
gone the year before. M. V. Dibble
engaged in farming in Clermont town-
ship. but retired to town some years
ago. His wife died six or seven years
ago and he has made his home with
his daughter, Mrs. Jessie Triem, at the
hotel.
Mr. Dibble who had been ill for
several months, slipped on the ice and
fell on Jan. 10, and the shock imposed
such a strain on his system that it
hastened his death.
Mr. Dibble is survived by five
daughters and two sons: Mrs. Will
Crowe of Clermont; Mrs. Grace L a t t i n
of Portland, Ore.; Arthur Dibble of
Spokane, Wash.; Mrs. Kittie Kern of
Oelwein; Mrs. Jessie Triem of Clermont;
Ezra Dibble on his father's old home
farm in Clermont township; Mrs. Herbert
Anderson of Clermont township.
Mr. Dibble was considered the best
posted man on the manufacture of
brick in this locality, as his father made
the first brick that ever were turned out
here. Clermont has more brick houses
than any other town of its size in this
part of Iowa and since pioneer days has
held the title of "the Brick City". Brick
making is still one of its leading industries.
Mr. Dibble was a member of one of the
earliest pioneer families of Clermont, of
whom the sole survivor now out of three
sisters and two brothers is George Dibble,
who was ninety-one years of age Sept. 7
last. Mr. and Mrs. Dibble still classing
themselves as Clermont residents, spend
their winters in the homes of their
daughters in West Union, Mrs. A. D.
Ferguson and Mrs. N. J. Breckner
The funeral of Mr. Dibble was held Thursday
afternoon, Jan 26, from the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Jessie Triem and burial was
made at the Clermont cemetery. Rev. E. J.
Starr of the Elgin M.E. church had charge of
the services.
