Lester Edward Gehring 1904-1995

Lester Edward Gehring, son of Edward W. and Louise (Beer) Gehring, was born August 26, 1904 on the family farm near Wadena, Iowa. He died Sunday, June 11, 1995 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. He was ninety years old.

Lester attended country schools in the neighborhood and high school in Wadena. He engaged in farming with his father for several years, where they raised full-blooded shorthorn cattle, until his parents retired and moved to Wadena.

He was united in marriage to Phyllis (Olesen)Herwig on December 27, 1944 in the Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. To this union one son, Robert Edward was born.

The couple continued farming until Lester's health forced them to retire, and they moved to Elgin. Later he worked as representative for Cedar Rapids Gazette, and also did house painting.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mabel Johnson, Marie Probert, and Florence Heyer; a brother, Carl Gehring; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Gehring and a granddaughter, Brandi Gehring.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his son, Robert (Marilyn) Gehring; three grandsons, Robert, Jr., Sean and Dustin, all of Marengo, Iowa; four step-daughters: Virginia Lammert of Orange City, Iowa, Marjorie Kohler of Sarasota, FL, Pat Schultz of Mason City, and Shirley Deverell of Las Vegas, Nev.; a step-son, Ray Herwig, Jr. of Cedar Rapids; 17 step-grandchildren, 36 step-great grandchildren, two step-great great grandchildren, three nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 13, 1995 at Illyria Community Church in rural Elgin, Iowa. Pastor Judy Deweber officiated. Casket bearers were Robert, Jr., Sean and Dustin Gehring; Tex Heyer, Stuart Schultz and Henry Herwig. Arrangements were made by Muehlethaler Funeral home in Elkader, Iowa. Interment was in the Illyria Cemetery, rural Elgin, Iowa.
