Sandra Lantz Wander, age 69, of Cedar Falls Lutheran Home #209, formerly of Dubuque, Holy Cross, Clermont, Gunder, Castalia, Decorah and Ossian, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. There will be no services as requested by Sandy.

Scattering of the cremated ashes will be performed next spring in a private memorial service for the immediate family.

Sandra Elaine was born the first child of Glen and Dorothy (Livingood) Schave at the Old Postville Hospital April 20, 1940. Sandra attended Bloomfield township school #4 and Castalia and Postville schools.

Dec. 13, 1957, Sandy married Marvin Gene Lantz at the Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin. They had three children: Robert Earl, Michael John and Lori Jean. Sandy and Marvin ran the tavern in Gunder. Marvin helped his father-in-law with a milk route and farm chores at a farm by Castalia; then Marvin worked for Brown Electric in Decorah and Sandy worked at the Decorah Hospital; they owned and ran the Nicandy Cafe in Ossian when Marvin died in a car accident outside Ossian April 21, 1970. Sandy then sold the Cafe and bought the General Store in Gunder.

July 8, 1972, Sandy married Gerald Joseph Wander at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder. No children were born to this union, but Gerald loved his step-children as if they were his own.

After selling the grocery store, Sandy and Gerald moved to the Wander farm outside of Clermont. Along with the farming, Sandy worked for an insurance company in Elkader, for Prairie Ag., rural Postville and was a manager in Home Interiors. They owned and ran the Flying Diamond Feed Company in Valentine, Neb. Upon returning to Clermont, they opened a can redemption center and grocery store in Clermont. When ill health became apparent for them both, they returned to the farm where Gerald died in Dec. 2001.

After Gerald’s death Sandy stayed on the farm for a short time, then moved to Holy Cross to be near her daughter and then to Dubuque to be near her mother and her sister, Mary.

Above all Sandy was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved making trips to Eagle Point Park to watch the barges and boats lock through the dam and enjoyed watching the birds and ducks. She loved roses and violet flowers and these comical frog figurines. Playing scrabble and putting puzzles together were two of her favorite pastimes.

Sandy was preceded in death by her two husbands, her father (2000) and her mother (2008), her son Robert Earl (Bobbie) Lantz (1973) and her mother and father-in-law.

Sandy is survived by her daughter Lori Lantz of Cedar Falls and a son Michael (Cathy) Lantz of Ohio; grandchildren, Tifani (Mrs. Bill Daly) of North Liberty; Tyler (Laura) Bushman of Cedar Falls; Anthony “Tony” Bushman of South Dakota; step-grandchildren, TJ Hanson and Crystal Smith; step-great grandchildren, Robbie and Bobbie Jo Smith and Bradley Hanson, a sister, Mary (Mrs. James Durr) of Dubuque and a brother, William Schave of Naples, Florida; brother-in-laws, Duane Wander of California and Keith Wander of Clermont; a sister-in-law, Linda (Mrs. Jerry Anderson) of Clermont; and many nieces and nephews also.

Sandy’s family wishes to express their thanks to the staff of the Lutheran Home, Hospice and Johnson Chiropractic for their help and thoughtful concern.
