Sarah Lea Butikofer

Sarah Lea Butikofer, 68, Elgin, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at her home following a 6-year battle with cancer. Sarah was born on November 18, 1940, north of Monona, Iowa, to Rufus and Sybil (Cowell) Seitz. She graduated from Monona High School.

Sarah was united in marriage to Larry Butikofer on September 24, 1960, in Monona, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. Sarah and Larry farmed together for many years near Elgin, Iowa. She also was a homemaker and loved spending time with her family. Sarah enjoyed knitting, gardening, taking pictures and especially loved her time with her grandchildren.

Sarah worked at the Elgin Canning Factory, Clayton County Care Facility, Apple Valley Cafe and Quarry Lodge. She will be deeply missed by her many family members and friends.

Survivors include her husband of forty-nine years, Larry Butikofer, Elgin; four children, Lyle Butikofer, Elgin, Doug (Karin) Butikofer, La Grange, IL, Brenda (Gordie) Smock, Waterloo, Brian (Theresa) Butikofer, Clayton; one brother, Louis (Shirley) Seitz, Monona; six grandchildren, Daniel and Nicole Smock, Benjamin and Dane Butikofer, Ashia Gerdemann, Sarah Rose Butikofer; two step-grandchildren, Kory (Dacia) Warrington, Emily Haws; five step-great-grandchildren, Dusty, Ricky, Leanna, Christopher, Koda and a host of other family members and friends.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Anna Mae Moose and three brothers, Earl, Dale and Leonard Seitz.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2009, at 10:30 am at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Elgin. The Rev. Rick Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2009, from 4-7 p.m. at the Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elgin, Iowa. Visitation will also be held one hour before services at the church on Friday.

Burial will follow in the Apostolic Cemetery, rural Elgin.
