Lydia Rose (Martie) Butikofer, the daughter of Louis and Louisa (Schneider) Martie, was born July 7, 1908, in Clayton County, IA. She passed away Monday, October 25, 1999 in the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, IA. She had reached the age of 91 years, 3 months and 18 days.

She was baptized at the Apostolic Christian Church, rural Elgin, IA. Lydia attended the Sunny Dale School District No. 4 in Marion Township, Clayton County.

For several years Lydia helped take care of her parents along with her brother Fred, and they farmed the home place. Later they remodeled the old Sunny Dale school house and moved in. They raised strawberries and also picked and cracked nuts to sell. Throughout her life she worked at the Elgin Restaurant, Elgin Canning Factory and Hellum Produce. She belonged to the Sunnydale Club and was a member of the Apostolic Church.

On October 1, 1958, she married Elmer Butikofer at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, IA. They lived in Elgin until October of 1993, when they moved to Postville. Lydia became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center on February 14, 1994.

Lydia enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting and making dolls. She made many quilts for baby and wedding gifts. It was not unusual to go to her home and find a quilt frame set up with a quilt ready to be stitched and baked goods to be served. She also had a rug loom and made many rag rugs. Woodworking was another specialty of hers. Unfortunately she cut off three fingers with a table saw, and was no longer able to enjoy this pastime. However, that did not stop her from quilting and other craft work.

She will always be remembered for her cheery smile, a friendly hello and was always there with a helping hand when someone needed it. Lydia was a special person to many people.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Fred Martie; a sister, Marie Reierson and a nephew, Gene Wander.

She is survived by her husband Elmer, Postville; a sister Celia Wander, West Union; nephews, Glen (Shirley) Reierson, Clarence (Mavis) Reierson, Donald Reierson, Robert (Mary) Reierson, Gerald (Sandy) Wander, Duane Wander, Keith Wander; nieces, Lydia Molokken, Darlene Abel and Linda (Jerry) Anderson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
