William Nelson, Jr.

William Nelson, Jr., son of William A. and Alma (Mork) Nelson, was born Jan. 7, 1928 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Clermont, Iowa. He died Sunday, Jan. 23, 1994 in Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wis. He was 66.

He was baptized into the Lutheran Faith at the East Clermont Lutheran Church, and was confirmed at the West Clermont Lutheran Church, where he was a member prior to his death. He served on the Church Council and as its president, and had been the senior usher for funerals for the past 10 years.

He graduated from the Clermont High School. He entered the U. S. Army and was stationed in Korea during the final days of World War II. On Feb. 27, 1948 he married Gladys "Khaki" Harriet Yauslin in the West Clermont Lutheran Church. To this union, two daughters were born. They farmed east of Clermont. William had been a representative for Pioneer Seed Corn and had received an award for 30 years of service. He had been a member of the Clermont community Club, the American Legion Sheehan-Olson Post No. 375, the Four Oaks Golf and Country Club at Elkader, and the Pleasant Valley Country Club at Clermont and Elgin.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Gene O'Donnell; two brothers, Almer Leo Nelson and Milton Nelson; and a sister, Winefred. He is survived by his wife, Khaki; two daughters, Nancy O'Donnell of Fayette and Susan Zimmer and her husband David of West Union; two grandchildren , Tiffany Kuhens and her husband Kory of West Union and Brent O'Donnell of Fayette; several step-grandchildren and step-great -grandchildren; and two sisters, Vinah "Jackie" Shipton of Clermont and Virginia House and her husband Ralph of Dubuque.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 26 in the West Clermont Lutheran Church, the Rev. Joseph Nesheim officiating. Special music was provided by June Swenson and LaVerne Swenson. The organist was Pat Butikofer. The Schutte Funeral Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in God's Acres Cemetery, Clermont. Casket bearers were Roger Berg, Roger Amundson, Elliot Olson, Keith Kutzbach, Charles Thorson, Terry Rose, Mike Lerch, and Sylvan Taylor. Honorary casket bearers were Reuben Butikofer, Eugene Thorson, Sylvan Torkelson, Willet Miller, Lloyd Meier, and Wayne Larson.
