Elmer S. Landas, 85, of West Union died of age-related causes on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at the West Union Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 20, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, West Union, Iowa, with the Rev. Galen Smith officiating.

Inurnment was in the Lima Cemetery. Urn bearer was Chad Landas with honorary urn bearers Stephanie Landas, Brett Dvorak, Sarah Tucker and Andrea Dvorak.

Arrangements were handled by Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union.

Elmer Smith Landas was born April 7, 1924, in West Union to William and Dasie Mae (Brooks) Landas.

He graduated from West Union High School in 1942.

On June 1, 1944, Elmer was united in marriage with Hazel Marie Potter; they later divorced.

Elmer was a farmer, as well as a businessman in agribusiness and real estate. He served on several state agribusiness boards while operating a fertilizer business.

Preceding Elmer in death were his parents; his wife, Hazel; a granddaughter; and three brothers, Bob, Junior and Harry.

He is survived by three sons, Darryl (Beth) Landas of Decorah, Steve (Sue) Landas of Manlius, N.Y., and Mark Landas of West Union; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Howard (Lorna) Landas of Fayette and Jake (Joan) Landas of Mankato, Minn.; two sisters, Ruth McChane of Fayette and Carolyn (Larry) Werner of Oelwein; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
