George F. Meyer 1925-2009

George F. Meyer, 83, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 9, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado with the Rev. Dennis Hugdahl officiating.

Interment was in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post 503. Casket bearers were Steve Fisher, Matt Wenthe, Scott Wenthe, Dan Barness, Bryan Barness, and Jason Barness.

Arrangements were handled by Schmitz Funeral Home in Ossian.

George Frederick Meyer was born June 1, 1925, in Dover Township, Fayette County, to John L. and Hannah M. (Mittelstadt) Meyer.

He was baptized June 28, 1925, by the Rev. Shedtler and confirmed March 17, 1940, by the Rev. William A. Foege at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eldorado.

George attended country school near Eldorado.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps Engineers on June 22, 1945, and served in Giebelstadt, Germany, until honorably discharged Nov. 23, 1946.

He returned to Eldorado and married Luella L. "Tudy" Lauer on Jan. 12, 1947, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church. To this union four children were born.

George and Tudy farmed north of Eldorado, just into Winneshiek County, their entire married life.

In 2006, George entered the nursing home.

Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Hannah Meyer; a son, Donald, who died at birth; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter;

Surviving are his wife, Luella "Tudy" Meyer of Ft. Atkinson; three daughters, Diane (Bob) Pierson of Cedar Rapids, Wanda (Dennis) Wenthe of Fennimore, Wis., and Luann (Jim) Barness of Ossian; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Ramona) Meyer of West Union; many nieces and nephews.
