OELWEIN - Funeral services for Mabel Elisa Thomas, formerly of
Hazleton, will be 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at Zion Lutheran Church, with
the Rev. Leo Combs-Lay officiating. Burial will be in Richfield Cemetery,
rural Sumner.
Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Jamison-Schmitz
Funeral Home, and after noon Friday at the church.
Mrs. Thomas, 95, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2000, at
Grandview Healthcare Center, after a long illness. She was born
June 4, 1905, in rural Sumner, the daughter of Herman Frederick
Reinhard and Anna (Lewig) Zupke. She was educated in rural Sumner
schools. She married Carl Harrison Thomas on Dec. 18, 1929, at
St. Peter Lutheran Church, Richfield Settlement, rural Sumner. Mabel was
a homemaker and farmed with Carl near Sumner from 1929 to 1960. She
moved to Hazleton from 1960 to 1998, then to Grandview on Feb. 27, 1998.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Martha Circle and Hazleton
card clubs.
Survivors include one son, Marvin "Bud" (Nancy) of Oelwein; one
daughter, Jeanette (Vern) Nielsen of Burlington; seven grandchildren;
six great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Lucille Zupke of Sumner.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl, July 10,
1986; three sons, Duane and: two infants; an infant daughter; four
brothers, Henry, Carl, Edward and Walter Zupke; and two sisters, Carrie
Begalske and Melba Wilson.
