George A. DeVolt
The subject of this, sketch, whose
death occured at Stanley, Iowa, on
the morning of Nov. 3rd, 1891, was
born in Ohio, Aug. 17th, 1849. At
the age of five years, in company with
his father's family, he moved to Ogle
Co., Illinois, where he resided until
the removal of the family to Iowa in
the year 1875, when they settled on a
farm adjoining the present site of
Stanley. After five years residence in
this State he was married to Miss
Christina Manning. Five years later
they removed to Kansas, where they
resided four years. The next two,
years were spent in Nebraska and
then they returned to Iowa, reaching here
in April, 1891, since which time
their home has been in Stanley.
The large concourse of people that
attended his funeral gave testimony
to the respect they had for him and spoke
more than words of the place he
held in their esteem. The choir
from Hazleton rendered the impressive
services still more beautiful by
the music they so kindly furnished for
the occasion. Kindly by nature he
ever cultivated a friendly feeling towards
all. His end and aim always seeming to be
to practice the golden rule as far as was
in his power. His physical powers were
always delicate and disease had long since
rendered him unable to cope with severe
muscular exertion and had so undermined his
constituation that he fell an easy prey to
an attack of fever. His religious
experience dates back nearly ten years and
as long as reason held away he gave abundant
evidence that he had an abiding faith, that
the gift ofeternal life should be his
promised by the Master he loved and served.
