Benjamin Sayles 1827-1908

Benjamin Sayles who was one of the pioneer
settlers of Fayette county, died at the home
of his granddaughter, Mrs. Charles Belmer at
Dunkerton, December 27, 1908. He came here
from Illinois more than fifty years ago and
was engaged in milling for a number of years
on the present site of the city park. He
sawed lumber for of the first buildings in
this section and later he and his father
built a grist mill there, and for several
years ground wheat and other grain raised in
this vicinity.
He was 81 years, 5 months and 1 day old at
the time of his death.
