Funeral services were held for Eugene Robert Keppler at 2:00 p.m. on February 28, 2004 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa with interment in the St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Monona, Iowa. Leonard Funeral Home, Elgin, was in charge of the arrangements.

Eugene Robert (Shorty) Keppler, 69, of Elgin, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at his home in Elgin following a long illness. He was born June 26, 1934, in Monona to Joseph and Matilda (Havlicek) Keppler.

Eugene served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on May 14, 1957. He was married to Phyllis Matthies on February 22, 1962. Three children were born to this union.

He graduated from Monona High School. He worked with S.S. Kresge Company (later K-Mart). He opened stores across the mid-west before being promoted to K-Mart world headquarters in Troy MI. After retirement, he returned to Iowa.

Survivors include three sons, Patrick Keppler, Rochester Hills, MI, Michael (Amy) Keppler, Aurora, IL, Joseph (Jillynn) Keppler, Lake Orion, MI; four grandchildren, Sarah Keppler, James Keppler, Justin Keppler, Alison Keppler; one brother, Thomas (Shirley) Keppler, Monona and two nieces, Susan Keppler and Lisa Keppler. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph Keppler and Edward Keppler and one nephew, Gary Keppler.
