This community was both shocked and saddened last Saturday when the word came that Mrs. George
Brownell had passed away at Iowa City, where she had undergone an operation for gallstones a week previous and which was in itself successful; but her stomach which for some time failed to perform its proper functions, still refused to assume the normal condition and she finally succumbed to the inevitable. She had every care and attention that
not only doctors and nurses could give her, but of husband and children as well; for all remained at Iowa City during the time of her almost two weeks at the hospital.
Amanda Melissa Brownell, the eldest child of Henry and Lovonia Powers was born April 8, 1859 and died March 2, 1918. Her childhood and young womanhood was passed in the farm home at Scott Center, 4 1/2 miles east of this city, where her mother had been brought as a bride. December 24, 1885 she was married to George W. Brownell and nearly six years was spent on their farm near Stanley. In 1891 they moved to Oelwein which has since been their home. Besides her husband she leaves three children, Charles and Burr Brownell who live on their farms near Stanley and Mrs. Sarah Hallinan of this city and five grand children to mourn the loss of the kindest and truest wives and mothers that ever lived. She also leaves five sisters and one brother all living in this vicinity, besides other relatives and a host of friends and acquaintances who became greatly endeared to her during her almost fifty-nine years of life among them.
Mrs. Brownell was brought to her home in Oelwein, where lying among beautiful floral emblems the tribute of love, the last loving service was conducted by Rev. Frank P. Shaffer and Horance Foote on Tuesday afternoon, March 5th, 1918 at 2 o'clock.
After these helpful services, she was carried to OakDale Cemetery where in the faith of the General Resurrection she was
laid to rest.

Oelwein Daily Register - 6 Mar 1918
Note - Most likely the burials of both Mr. and Mrs. Brownell were later moved from Oakdale Cemetery to Woodlawn. It is also possible the obits are in error.
