Melissa Shippy Clark Porter (1846-1929)

Melissa Jane Hartford was born near Rowmanville, Canada, June 18, 1845, and died at Oelwein, Iowa. February 22, 1929, aged 83 years, 8 months and 4 days. She was married to Andrew Shippy July 15, 1862. In 1866 she with her family settled at Grove Hill, Bremer County. Iowa. Her husband died in 1874. To this union was born six children, one dying in infancy. In 1876 she was united in marriage to Edward Clark. To this union was born two sons. Mr. Clark died on February 7, 1909. She united with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Canada in the year 1863 and for 66 years has been a member of that organization. She was united in marriage to
Henry Porter, August 9, 1910. Mr. Porter died January 22, 1912.

Mrs. Porter was one of the pioneers in Iowa and was a most earnest and energetic woman. Her children were always the chief joy in her life and she was one who made many friends. The children who remain to mourn her departing are: Edgar A. Shippy of Bison, S. Dak; Benjamin A. Shippy of Crofton, Neb.; George A. Shippy of Coloma, S. Dak; Mrs. Mattie Bell of Alida, Sask., Canada; Andrew Shippy of Waterloo, Ia; Fred S. Clark of Oelwein, Ia. and Charles Jesse Clark of Lansford, N. Dak. There are 26 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

The funeral was held from the Christian church in Oelwein. Sermon by Rev. E. R. Davis of Moline, Illinois. Interment was in the Fairbank cemetery.
