Reuben Butikofer

Funeral services for Reuben Butikofer, 82, were Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. in the West Clermont Lutheran Church. The Rev. Richard J. Vettrus officiated.

The grandchildren, Jennifer Heckmann and David Amundson, each sang a solo. Casket Bearers were: Justin Heckmann, Lewis Byrnes, DeeJae Butikofer, Robbie Butikofer, Chad Coffin, David Amundson. Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Apostolic Christian Cemetery, rural Elgin.

Reuben LeRoy Butikofer, the son of Albert Butikofer and Marie Schupbach Butikofer, was born September 7, 1919, near Elgin. He died Saturday, August 10, 2002 in Palmer Lutheran Health Center at West Union.

He was baptized in the Apostolic Christian Church at Elgin. He attended the rural school near his home. Reuben was in the U. S. Army from 1942-46, where he served as crewman in a tank unit, as a parts clerk and as a cook.

August 5, 1944 Reuben married Bertha Catherine Borwig at LaPorte City. They had four children. Reuben was employed at the John Deere Plant from 1946-50. He farmed in the Elgin area from 1950-55 and in the Clermont area from 1955-69. Reuben retired in 1988 and moved to Clermont.

Reuben enjoyed his family and especially loved to have the grandchildren and great grandchildren visit. He kept a good supply of Ritz crackers and chewie cow candies for them. Reuben was an avid collector of toy tractors and various other items, including coins. He also enjoyed fishing.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Anna Butikofer, and Elizabeth (Werner) Moore, and a son-in-law, Gary Heckmann. Surviving is his wife, Bertha, two daughters, Linda Marie Quandahl of Waukon, and Mary Ann (Albert) Amundson, of Clermont, two sons, Ronald Blaine Butikofer, of Clermont, and Donald LeRoy (Heidi) Butikofer of Alpha.

Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, Jennifer Heckmann, Janette (Lewis) Byrnes, Joyelle Heckmann, Justin Heckmann, Jodi Heckmann, Heather (Chad) Coffin, Amber Amundson, David Amundson, DeeJae Butikofer, Robbie Butikofer, Jayme Butikofer, Joan Butikofer, Stephen (Angela) Woods, Kara (Jeremiah)Johnson, Daniel Woods; four great grandchildren, Cassidy Faith Byrnes, Karlee Marie Crawford, Brodie Woods, and Ali Woods; five brothers, Harry (Rose) Butikofer, IA, Paul (Mildred) Butikofer, Bert (Beulah) Butikofer, Albert (LaVerne) Butikofer, all of Elgin,IA, and William (Norma) Butikofer, of Gridley, IL, and two sisters, Ruth (Wilbur) Wiegand of Kempton, Ill., and Shirley (Eugene) Nester of Lester.

Reuben was a member of the West Clermont Lutheran Church. He was a member of various other organizations that supported the rights of Senior Citizens and a member of the VFW and American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans organizations.
