Ferd Morgan Hackett (1895-1981)

Ferd Morgan Hackett died October 30, 1981, at the age of 86, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah. He was born January 28, 1895 at rural Oelwein, to George M. and Nancy Hillman Hackett. He was married in 1916 to Margie Trower of Oelwein, she died in 1930. In 1931, he married Esther Thomas of Randalia.

Most of his adult life was spent as a mechanic in several Northeast Iowa towns. In 1955, he was severely burned in a fire at Arlington, where he lived the past 31 years. He was a member of the Lookout Lodge, #395, Sumner. His greatest hobby was his large fruit and vegetable garden where he raised produce for his own table and to give to his children and friends.

The highlight of his later years was the Open House celebration, June 14, this summer, for his and Esther's 50th wedding anniversary.

Surviving are his wife, Esther, Arlington; three sons, Bob Hackett of San Jose, California, Ray Hackett of Belleville, New Jersey, Mack Hackett of Guttenberg; five daughters, Mrs. Joe (Marianne) Thomas of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Frances Mishler of Gustine, California, Margie Hackett of Phoenix, Arizona, Mrs. George (Nancy) Campbell of Laurel, Maryland, Mrs. Wayne (Mary) Stevenson of Decorah; three sisters, Mrs. Ilene McGlumphy of Chatam, New Jersey, Effie Franck of Protem, New Jersey and Mrs. Stella Riley of Clear Lake; 17 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at the Brant-Kerns Funeral Home in Oelwein. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein. The Rev. David Ash of the United Methodist Church, Decorah, officiated.

Pallbearers were Allen Wescott, LeRoy Newton, John Newton, Arnold Hamlett, Garland Trower and Milan Brant.
