CLARISSA CLARA HAZEN SAWYER (1792-1899)

From West Union Argo, Clermont, IA, dated May 9, 1888:
Died. SAWYER - at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Hough, of Clermont township, May 6, 1888, Mrs. Clarissa Sawyer, aged 95 years, 11 months.

Mrs. Sawyer was born in North Island, Grand Isle County, Vermont in 1792. In 1816 she was married to Allen Sawyer and in 1850 they came to Clermont, Iowa, being among the first settlers of Clermont township, where their home has been since that time.
Mrs. Sawyer was the mother of 10 children, 7 of whom are living, the oldest being 70 years of age. She had 54 grand children and 74 great grand children, making a total of 138 children, grand children and great grand children.
Mrs. Sawyer was a member of the Methodist Church and a firm believer in the divine grace and watchful care of her Heavenly Father. Her long life has been full of strong, wise endeavor, and she has carried the burdens laid up her with her face turned heavenward, eagerly waiting for the sound of the "boatman's oar," and thinking each day "tomorrow I will surely catch a gleam of the snowy sail," but the spirit seemed loath to leave its dwelling place of so many years, but at last the "old old fashion" entered silently, noiselessly, the shadows deepened, and then the hands, those dear busy hands that had lifted and carried so many of life's burdens, were crossed above the stilled heart, and the loving friends who were constantly near her knew that she had "crossed the river," that mystic river which divides our world from the life everlasting.
