FAYETTE - Funeral services for Francis Leo Meighan will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Fayette, with the Rev. Dale Rausch officiating. Burial will be in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.
Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Fayette, where there will be a 7 p.m. scripture service.
Mr. Meighan, 77, died Monday, June 23, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 2, 1920, in Sumner, the son of James and Margaret Costello Meighan. He was educated in Sumner public schools. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He landed on Normandy with the Allied Invasion and was seriously wounded a short time later. Mr.Meighan farmed with his father near Fayette and also managed the state liquor store in Oelwein for many years prior to retirement. He was a member of St. Francis Assisi Catholic Church. An active member of A.A . for 45 years, he took great pride in helping other members. He was also a member of Fayette American Legion Post 339, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include one brother, Raymond of Dewey, Ariz.; two sisters, Bernice Murphy of Sumner and Geraldine Hyman of Hawkeye; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and six brothers, Leonard, LeRoy, James, Norbert, Robert and John, who died in infancy.
