Rosa Riegel
A Funeral Mass for Rosa Riegel was held Monday, March 6, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church in Clermont, Iowa. Father Dale Rausch was the Celebrant.
Participating in the service was Kathy Fassbinder, organist, Lloyd Meier, Eucharistic Minister, Michael Finnegan, Lector, and Damien Matt and Matthew Fassbinder. The Casket Bearers were: Leo Riegel, Chris Riegel, Craig Riegel, Charis Riegel, Kayla Riegel, and Kyle Riegel. Burial was in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery at Clermont.
The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Clermont was in charge of arrangements.
Rosa (Lorz) Riegel was born April 11, 1910, at Stettfeld, Bavaria, Germany. She graduated from high school in Germany. She immigrated to the United States in 1931. In August of 1932, Rosa married her hometown sweetheart, Burkard Riegel, at Garnavillo, Iowa. To this union a son, Leo, was born.
They lived in Clermont, where Burkhard had a blacksmith shop for over 50 years. She was a Clermont resident for 70 years and truly loved her new-found home. She passed away Friday, March 3, 2006, at the USA Health Care in Newton, Iowa, where she had been a resident since September 13, 2003. She was 95 years old
Rosa was a devoted housekeeper, an active local citizen and quick to volunteer for community projects. She was proud of being raised as a "farm girl" and loved to nurture her vegetable and flower garden. She had a wonderful smile and a willingness to help that will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Rosa was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and the Rosary Society in Clermont. She was a member of several other Clermont community organizations, including the Federated Study Club, the Garden Club and the Clermont Historical Society.
She is survived by her son, Leo and his wife, Barb Larsen, of Denver, Co, three grandchildren, Chris J. (Lisa) Riegel, Newton, IA, Craig J. (Lisa) Riegel, Neenah, WI, and Charis J. Riegel, Englewood, CO, two great grandchildren, Kayla M. Riegel and Kyle M. Riegel, of Newton, IA, and a sister, Sophia Oppelt, Stettfeld, Bavaria, Germany.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Burkard, who died December 23, 1991, and her daughter-in-law, Joan Riegel.
