Westgate -
At the depot Monday morning were
two little motherless waifs, one about
six years old the other possibly three,
both girls, who had made the trip all
alone from Scammon, Kansas, being
on their way to Hampton, Iowa. Their
mother had recently died and they
had been sent out alone, with all of
their worldly possessions in a little
box, not over two foot long and a foot
in depth and width and no one to look
after them, or provide for them. They
were poorly clad, with no hats or
wraps, and excited the sympathy of
all who saw them. From what could
be learned from the little ones they
were going to their grandmother, or
at least some relative, but they did
not seem to know just who. While
this incident well illustrates the safety
of our modern system of traveling,
it seems almost cruel to send little
ones out in that manner and it probably
would not be done except in a case
of absolute necessity.
