Dorland, D. W., farmer, Section 30 (Clermont township); P. O. Clermont; born in Ashland County, Ohio, August 6, 1829; moved to Iowa and Clermont township in 1852; settled on his present farm in 1857. He was married on October 2, 1851, to Miss Rachel Shaffer, from Bedford County, Pennsylvania; she was born in 1832; they have ten children --- George W., Annie C., W. A., Clara A., Hebern L., James F., Edward A., Libbie May, Eva Letta, May A., all living. He has held the office of School Director sixteen years, President of the School Board two years, Secretary of School Board six years. He has 166 acres of land, valued at $4,500; he is engaged in hop raising quite exextensively; he was among the earliest settlers in the county and endured may privations. He was engaged in teaming for a few years from West Union to Dubuque and St. Paul.
