Gifford, Lester, farmer, Section 20 (Auburn township); PO Douglass; born in Renselaer Co., NY, in 1809. Married Christianna King in 1835; she was born in Montgomery Co., NY, in 1813; have five children living --- John K., Simeon, Alzina, George W., and Jessie; lost five children -- Emily, Charlotte, William H., Enoch L. and one that died in infancy. Left New York State in a wagon, with his family, traveling to Buffalo, then by boat to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, settling in Racine, Wisconsin, where he resided until 1854, when he came to the county and settled on his present estate; has a farm of 200 acres, valued at $30 per acre; his farm was occupied by the Winnebago Indians, being part of their reservation at the time; is one of the oldest settlers in this township.
