Maye Case
Estherville – Memorial services for Maye Case, 91, of Estherville, will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Estherville Lutheran Church with Pastor Kermit Rye and Pastor Arlyn Norris officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Estherville. She died Tuesday, March 14, 1995 at McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.

She was born March 30, 1903 in Estherville, the daughter of William and Mary (Mayme Verink) Case. She received her education in the Estherville schools graduating from high school in 1920. At 17 she started her teaching career, when the county superintendent got her a certificate because of a teaching shortage. She received her bachelor of arts degree in 1949 from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, which she earned entirely through summer courses over a 29 year period.

Case is best remembered for the 47 and ˝ years she was a teacher. She traveled to every state in the U.S. and Canada. She devoted her entire life to the Estherville Public Library and started the children’s room portion of the library. She was active in Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Senior Citizen Center and Dinner Date.

She was a past member of the Grace Episcopal Church, a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church, North Star Chapter of the Eastern Star and a past Worthy High Priestess; a lifetime member of the Wa-tan-ye and V.F.W. Auxiliary. In 1987, she received the “Woman of the Year Award” by Beta Sigma Phi and also received the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame Award in 1990, from Gov. Terry Branstad.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers and two sisters.

Case donated her body to the University of Iowa at Iowa City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Friends of the Estherville Public Library. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 16, 1995)
