Hiles Rites To Be Held On Monday
James Allen Hiles, 83, longtime resident and former mayor of Gruver, died Friday, Dec. 13 (1963) at 12 noon at Holy Family Hospital of complications of advanced age. He had been hospitalized since Thanksgiving.
Allen Hiles, the son of Jacob and Sarah Hiles, was born March 12, 1880 at Hunt (City), Illinois.
He was married to Florence Myrtle Isley, Aug. 31, 1902. Mr. and Mrs. Hiles came to Iowa in March 1928 and settled on a farm near Gruver.
In 1942, they retired from farming and moved to Gruver, where he has since presided.
Mr. Hiles was a member of the Christian Church of Hunt (City), Illinois, later transferring his membership to the Gruver Presbyterian Church where he was active in all church affairs. Mr. Hiles also took part in community activities and he served as mayor of Gruver for serveral years.
Surviving his death are one son, Buford E. Hiles, Pittsburgh, Pa.; three daughters, Mrs. Rex (Clarice) Inman of Longville, Minn., Mrs. Vernon (Bernice) Brown of Estherville and Mrs. Maurice (Dorothy) Jensen of Long Beach, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Two sisters, Mrs. Ed Sweetser, Henderson, N. C., and Mrs. Neil Herd, Vancouver B. C., and one brother, William V. Hiles of Estherville, also survive.
Preceding him in death were his wife and one son, Raleigh, who died at the age of two years, and several brothers and sisters.
Public funeral services will be held at 10:00 o'clock, Monday morning, Dec. 16 at the Gruver Presbyterian Church, the Rev. L. V. Osborne officiating. A family service will be held at 8 pm. Sunday at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel.
Friends may call at Reese Funeral Home from Saturday afternoon at four o'clock until 8:30 Monday morning at which time the body will be taken to lie in state until time of services. Burial is to be in East Side Cemetery.
