Joyce Maxine (Hall) Hiney was the first child born to Fred and Maggie (Peak) Hall on March 20, 1926, near Dunseith in Rolette County, North Dakota. Joyce passed away on February 13, 2022, at Windsor Manor in Estherville, Iowa at the age of 95 years.

In 1938, the family moved to Iowa near the family of Maggie to help them as they were getting older. All the children went to grade school in the Bolstad School House. Joyce then attended and graduated from Maple Hill, Iowa High School in 1944. In May she attended a Teacher's College in Estherville Iowa and got her state certificate. She then taught school at the Ellsworth #3, north of Gruver, Iowa for two years, the school then merged with Gruver. Joyce married Frank Hiney at the Estherville Methodist Church on May 11, 1946. They lived in Estherville and that fall she taught school in Superior, Iowa.

In the spring of 1948 Frank's job found them traveling around southern Iowa putting in electricity lines to farms and small towns that didn't have electricity yet. In Corning, Iowa Joyce met ladies going to "Summer School" to renew their teacher's certificate and joined them for classes at the Creston, Iowa College.

Tired of moving around, they moved back to Spencer, Iowa where Joyce had a teaching job at Fostoria, in a country school. In 1952, they rented a farm by Gruver and began a new career. Joyce taught in Wallingford, Iowa three years, then took a job at Maple Hill, her alma-mater. She taught there until 1958, then was a mother and farm wife only substituting when she found the time. Their son Rhett was adopted in 1958, their daughter Danielle was adopted in 1961.

Joyce enjoyed sewing clothes, quilting, reading, gardening, working at the library, and farming. Traveling with her sisters was a favorite past-time of hers. Family was very important to Joyce, she enjoyed going to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren's activities whenever possible.

Joyce is survived by her son Rhett (Delaine) Hiney, daughter Danielle Hiney, grandchildren Miranda (Jerimiah) DePyper and Garrett (friend Katie) Hiney, great-grandchildren Lilly and Dyson Hiney and Mackenzie, Mercedes, and MaKayla DePyper, and great-great grandchild Elizabeth. She is also survived by her sisters Doris Klingbeil, Donna Lange, and Sharon (Jerry) Sents; brothers Clyde Hall and Clayton Hall; many nieces and nephews scattered across the country; and special friend “Boss Lady.”

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and sister Jewell Strube.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at the First Presbyterian church in Armstrong, Iowa, with burial at the Armstrong Grove Cemetery at Armstrong.
