Steven Arthur Young 1953-2020

Steven Arthur Young passed away on August 31, 2020 at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 65 years.

Steven Young, son of Arthur and Marion Maxine (Woltman) Young, was born on October 28, 1953 in Cherokee, Iowa.

As a child, Steve and his family moved around a lot. When Steve was in 6th grade they settled in Estherville, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1972. He then attended ILCC [Iowa Lakes Community College] before transferring to Mankato, where he studied history. He enlisted in the Air Force on November 16, 1983. He was in the Iowa Air National Guard for nearly 15 years.

On October 27, 1984 he was united in marriage to Laura Swanson. The couple made their home in Estherville and had three boys. Throughout his younger years Steve worked at Phillips 66, John Morrell & Co. and Teledyne Aerospace. He worked for Mediacom as a technician for 15 years, retiring on January 18, 2019.

Steve was a member of Grandview Baptist Church in Estherville, where he ran the video booth at the services. Steve was very confident in his Faith. He enjoyed driving John Deere tractors and mowing numerous lawns. He was a big history buff with special interests in military history and World War II. Steve was excellent at trivia and he liked to tease and make everyone smile.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Young of Estherville; his sons, Nicholas Young of Washington, Iowa, Joshua Young and Zachary Young, both of Estherville, and his "foster" son, Alex Nelson of Estherville. He is also survived by his sisters: Kathy (Woodrow) Kraft of Lakefield, Minnesota and Jill (Rodney) Ahrens of Estherville; sisters-in-law Carol Young of Estherville, Sally (Bernie) Verbrugge of Armstrong, Cindy Swanson of Cokato, Minnesota.

Steven was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Janet Ekren; his brother, James Young and his brother-in-law, Danville Swanson.
