Died: At the home of his son, E.C. Smith, of Swan Lake township, July 4th, 1895, Hiram SmithHiram Smith was born in Ellsburgh, Jefferson county, New York, June 16th, 1823. He was married to Miss Betsy Wood, of Ellsburgh, Jan. 5th, 1848, who died Feb. 14th, 1854. Two children were born of this marriage: Eaton Smith, of Oswego, ll., and Mrs. E.O. Hibbard, of Manley Junction, Iowa.
After the death of his first wife, he moved to Illinois where he was married, Feb. 27th, 1855, to Mrs. Gertrude J. Miller, of Bristol, Ill. Of this marriage two children were born, Dorlesky and Eddie Smith.
He removed to Illinois to Vinton, Iowa, Oct. 10th, 1865, where he resided until this spring when he came to Emmet county. While living at Vinton he suffered the loss of his second wife, Sept. 26th, 1884, since which time he has made his home with his son, Eddie.
He was stricken with La Grippe last winter from which he never recovered and which was the cause of his death. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, July 11, 1895)
