David Mitchell Passes Away
Armstrong Journal: David MacFarland Mitchell, subject of this sketch, was born in Perth County, Canada, Nov. 8, 1857, and died at his home in Armstrong, Iowa, Oct. 12, 1919 at the age of 61 years, 11 mos. and 4 days. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1870 and settled on a farm near Algona where they resided only one year when they moved to Armstrong and unto the farm now owned by Alex Allen. He graduated from the Algona College and taught school many years both before and after he was married. He was united in marriage to Miss Alice Gibbs, Feb. 3, 1880. To this union were born four children all of whom survive and are at home, Edith V., Verner J., Flossie P., and Glenn R. He spent most of his life in and near Armstrong engaging in business in Superior and Armstrong. The past few years he worked as a mason.

Mr. Mitchell left home early in September to rest but took sick immediately and was taken to the Hospital in Grand Rapids where he was for nineteen days after which he was brought home by his brother Robert. For almost three years he suffered intensely from cancer of the bladder caused by a fall about eight years ago. Skilled physicians did their best. Kind and loving hands of loved ones, neighbors and friends, administered to his needs, but to no avail. The sting of death did its work. “O death where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” 1 Cor. 15:55.

He leaves to mourn their loss his wife and four children, two brothers, Robert C. of Minneapolis, Andrew M. of Waterloo, and three sisters, Mrs. John Gibbs of Langsford, N. Dak., Mrs. Susan Burt and Mrs. Wm. Moore of Armstrong, besides other relatives and friends. One brother preceded him to the great beyond.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. church by the pastor Tuesday afternoon and the remains laid to rest in the Armstrong cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, October 22, 1919)
