Brian Guinn, 6, Is Victim of Accident
Second Fatality of Year

Emmet County recorded its second traffic fatality of the year yesterday afternoon with the death of Brian Dale Guinn, six, of Armstrong.

The accident occurred at the intersection of 4th Avenue and 7th Street in Armstrong.

John Masterson, Jr., three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Masterson, St. James, Minn. apparently turned the keys of his father’s car and according to the sheriff’s office and the Highway Patrol, who investigated the accident, young Masterson pushed down on the accelerator of the automobile.

The car was apparently in reverse gear and it backed from where it was parked on the east side of 7th Street in a circle through the intersection of 4th Avenue and 7th Street.

Here it struck the Guinn youngster who according to authorities, had fallen off the bicycle he was learning to ride and was just picking it up when he was struck.

The lad suffered cuts, bruises, broken ribs and a punctured lung as a result of the accident. He was taken to Holy Family Hospital, and was going to be transferred to University Hospitals, Iowa City, when he died.

The left side of the Masterson vehicle was scratched. Besides striking the boy, the car damaged a tree and a fence in its backward progress. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 16, 1964)

Rites for Guinn Boy
Funeral services for Brian Dale Guinn, 6, son of Mr. and Mrs. Laverne Guinn, Armstrong, are set for tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church of Armstrong. Family services will be at 1:30. The Rev. Roger Tappmeyer will officiate. The body of young Guinn, who was born on Aug. 31, 1957, will lie in state at Slaba Funeral from today until the services tomorrow. He died as a result of injuries suffered in a traffic mishap Monday afternoon. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 17, 1964)
