A large delegation of members of the Smith clan went to Armstrong Monday for the funeral of Mrs. Sam Churchill, the former Elsie Smith Madock [Matlock]. Burial was made in Armstrong. (Jefferson Bee, Jefferson, IA, October 5, 1943)

Funeral at Armstrong for Mrs. Sam Churchill
Armstrong – Mrs. Sam Churchill, 51, died at her home here Friday. Funeral services were held Monday at the Methodist church, with the Rev. N.F. Grote, officiating.

She is survived by her husband, 1 daughter, Juanita Nicoseu, 1 granddaughter, Jerry Louise of Long Beach, Cal.; also 1 sister, Alice Colbert, 3 brothers, Walter, Orley and Dr. L.E. Smith, all of Jefferson. (Mason City Globe Gazette, Mason City, IA, October 6, 1943)

Burial At Armstrong For Mrs. Churchill
The funeral service for Mrs. Sam Churchill was conducted Monday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church at Armstrong, with the Rev. N.F. Grote officiating. Burial was made in the Armstrong cemetery there.

Elsie Mae Smith, daughter of Geo. E. and Lura Smith, was born in Greene county Jan. 9, 1892, and passed away at her home in Armstrong Oct. 1, 1943.

Her young womanhood was spent in and near Jefferson. She was educated in the Jefferson schools.

In her girlhood she became a member of Central Church of Christ in Jefferson and remained a faithful worker.

Two brothers, Albert and Ralph Smith and a daughter, Lura Grace have preceded her in death.

She was married Sam Churchill July 2, 1929, and went to Armstrong to make her home. She transferred her membership to the Methodist church there and was a faithful and untiring worker.

She leavers to mourn her untimely passing her devoted husband, one daughter, Juanita Nicoson, one granddaughter, Jerry Louise, of Long Beach, Cal., one sister, Alice Colbert, three brothers, Walter, Orley and Dr. L.E. Smith, all of Jefferson, besides a host of relatives and friends. (Jefferson Herald, Jefferson, IA, October 7, 1943)
