Pioneer Woman is Called
Mrs. Andrew Burt, Resident of Armstrong Community 67 Years Passes After Operation
Armstrong – Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon in the Presbyterian church for Mrs. Andrew Burt of Armstrong, who died Tuesday [June 14, 1937] afternoon in the Coleman hospital in Estherville, following an operation two days before. The Rev. R.R. Irwin will conduct services.

Susan Mitchell was the daughter of James and Susan Mitchell and was born in Ontario, Canada on Nov. 5, 1867.She came with her parents from Canada to Emmet county in the spring of 1870, where in Armstrong Grove township they took up a homestead along the fiver about a mile south of the present site of the town. In those days this vicinity was all wild prairie land with a few scattered settlers.

Attended Country School
In this environment she endured all the privations as well as the pleasures of those early pioneers. She attended the country schools nearby and grew to womanhood on this homestead. She was of a likeable disposition and was always a favorite among her school mates and with young and older folks of this early settlement.

On March 14, 1889 she was united in marriage at Fairmont, Minn. to Andrew Burt of Seneca township, Kossuth county. They made their home on a farm in Seneca township, where they lived, with the exception of two years until they moved into Armstrong in 1931.

Leaves Seven Children
Those left to mourn are, her husband and their seven children, Glen, Andy jr., Joe, Robert and Alva all of Armstrong and vicinity. Mrs. Helen Wood of Ringsted and Mrs. Susie Helmers of near Lone Rock. Also sixteen grandchildren, one brother, Andrew Mitchell of Waterloo and one sister, Mrs. J. Gibbs of Langsford, N.D.

She has been a cheerful homemaker and loyal companion, a devoted and sacrificing mother. A friend to the poor, a comfort to the distressed and one who will be deeply mourned by those nearest and dearest to her. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, June 17, 1937)
