Grandma Brooks is Dead
Venerable Old Lady Passed to Her Reward Tuesday Evening at Armstrong
With all her children about her bedside, Grandma Brooks [Melvina Augusta Nichols Brooks] passed away Tuesday evening, August 4th, at 10:00 o’clock. The termination of her earthly stay did not come unexpectedly. For several days past, it has been evident that she could not much longer survive the ravage of disease, and when the death angel entered and carried her away last Tuesday evening, it was but the liberation of a tired, worn body, from the bonds of pain and suffering. It has been several years since Mrs. Brooks has enjoyed good health, and during that period has wrestled with various ailments. Death was the result of an ailing heart. One by one are the pioneers passing. Forty-two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brooks came to Emmet county and located upon a homestead south and west of this place. Together they withstood the hardships and privations of early settlers, and it was their privilege to witness the transformation of a wild, desolate prairie into a veritable garden. They labored side by side for years until ten years ago, when Mr. Brooks died. For several years she has made her home in Armstrong - she and her son, Henry, occupying a cozy little cottage in the east part of town. Grandma Brooks was one of those grand old motherly characters that were peculiar to years gone by. Everyone loved her, and her acts of kindness of the past are a most fitting monument to her memory. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon in the Presbyterian church, Rev. MacLeod officiating.
It was impossible to obtain a complete biographical sketch of the deceased at this time, but it will appear in our next issue. – Armstrong Journal (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 12, 1914)
