Estherville – Funeral services for LaVerne T. [Tweedt] Valen, 80, of Estherville will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12 at the Estherville Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Arlyn Norris officiating. Interment will be held at Palestine Lutheran Cemetery in Dolliver with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388, American Legion Post 91 and AMVETS Post 3391. He died on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002 at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm. on Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

LaVerne was born on Oct. 2, 1921 in Dolliver, the son of Lewis and Isabelle (Tweedt) Valen. LaVerne was baptized and confirmed at Palestine Lutheran Church in Dolliver. He graduated from Dolliver High School.

LaVerne served in the United States Army from 1942 through 1945 during World War II. After his discharge from military service LaVerne returned to the area.

On Aug. 18, 1946 he was united in marriage to Marian Pauline Peterson in Armstrong. After their marriage, the couple made their home, raised their family and were engaged in farming on the same farm where LaVerne was born.

LaVerne served on many boards throughout his life including the Dolliver School Board, Palestine Lutheran Church Board, the Emmet County Fair Board, and the Emmet County Farm Bureau Board.

He was a member of Palestine Lutheran Church until its closing, a current member of Estherville Lutheran Church and VFW Post 3388 in Estherville.

LaVerne is survived by his wife, Marian of Estherville; one son, Larry Valen of Estherville; two daughters, Janice Valen of Papillion, Neb.; Joni Parks and her husband, Eric of Papillion; four grandchildren, Katherine, Brittany, Courtney and Tea Parks of Papillion; and his brothers and sisters, Robert Valen of Estherville; Arlene Bygness and her husband, Don of Hackensack, Minn.; Shirley Juhl and her husband, Arvin of Estherville; and Jim Valen and his wife, Judy of Spirit Lake.

LaVerne has been preceded in death by one daughter, Eileen Ruth Klem; and his parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 10, 2002)
