Carl Carlsen Killed
Carlsen Hit By Car On Street
Carl J. [Johann] Carlsen, a 77 year old retired farmer died in the Coleman hospital about midnight on Tuesday [December 24, 1940]. Death was caused by injured received when he was struck by a car driven by Luella Shaw.

There was heavy traffic on the street. Miss Shaw did not see Mr. Carlsen come out on the street in front of the Grand Café where the accident occurred. When the car struck Mr. Carlsen, knocking him to the pavement, her car was stopped in less than five feet.

Miss Shaw and Berger Handeland who saw the accident, put Mr. Carlsen in Miss Shaw’s car and rushed him to the hospital where it was found he had sustained a broken leg and wrist. Later it developed he had also received a skull fracture. It was from the latter that death was caused.

Miss Shaw is a daughter of A. Shaw of this city. She is a teacher in the public schools of Fort Dodge. No blame is attached to Miss Shaw for the accident. She was in every way within the law. It’s just one of those sad accidents that unavoidably happen.

Mr. Carlsen resided on North Seventh street. He retired from farming and moved to this city to make his home. He was a man of many friends and his neighbors spoke very highly of him. He was born in Nermen, Norway, Dec. 18, 1863. In 1892 he moved to a farm in Martin county where he resided until he retired.

Mr. Carlsen is survived by his widow [Melinda Knutson Carlsen] and nine children: Mrs. Clara Anderson, Ceylon, Minn.; Mrs. Stanley Erickson, Estherville; Mrs. Erling Christensen, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Everett Shaw, Estherville; Carl Nicholl Carlsen, Dunnell, Minn.; the Rev. Sam Carlsen, Chicago, Ill.; Alfred William Carlsen, Ceylon, Minn.; Kenneth Levi Carlsen, Dolliver; the Rev. Sanford Carlsen, Wells, Minn.

The funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:30 from the home in this city and at 2:30 at the Palestine church, the Rev. T. Hansen of Lakefield, Minn., officiating. Interment will be made in the Palestine cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, December 26, 1940)
