J.C. Allen, died at his home in Maumee, Ohio, Saturday [February 16, 1895] morning at the age of 86 years. He had been in declining health for some years and his demise was not unexpected. Mr. Allen was a resident of Estherville in the early ‘70s, engaged in the mercantile business and is well remembered by the old settlers. He was a courtly, dignified gentleman and a man of wide reading and high character. His sons, F.E. Allen, of the First National bank and G.C. Allen, county auditor, left on Saturday evening’s Chicago train to attend the funeral. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, February 21, 1895)
