August Nelson, 47, Dies in Alaska
Mrs. Mary Nelson of 708 Fifth Avenue South received word by telegram yesterday that her son, August Magnus Nelson, 47, died June 11 in Fairbanks, Alaska. Mrs. Nelson said her son went to Alaska a year ago and had secured some kind of employment there. The government telegram listed the cause of his death as myocarditis, a heart ailment. He had undergone surgery for ulcers previous to going to Alaska.

Nelson, who had last visited here in Estherville four years ago, was born on Nov. 17, 1900, on a farm near Raleigh. The family moved to Gruver and he received his education there. Following the First World War he enlisted in the Navy for three years and afterwards lived in California. Nelson also worked five years as an employe of the Rock Island railroad out of Estherville. His father, who died in 1922, worked for the same line for 19 years.

Nelson had never married. Surviving him are his mother, a brother Henry Nelson who is in service, and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Aanonson of Fredericks, Wis., Mrs. Carl Hanson of Cedar Falls and Mrs. Mary Hartle of Midland, S.D.

The body is being returned here to the Sternborg Funeral home which is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Nelson expects a letter from the government soon with further details of her son’s death. Funeral arrangements will not be made until the body arrives here. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 15, 1948)
