Thor Sunde Dies Following Illness of One Year
Death came this morning at four o’clock to Thor Sunde, a life long resident of the county. Mr. Sunde had been ill for over a year. He underwent an operation at Rochester in April of last year for a brain tumor. He has been at home since that time but his health seemed to be failing.He has been in Park View Clinic for two weeks but his condition was very serious when taken there.
Mr. Sunde was well known in this vicinity. He held the respect of those who knew him. He was a kind and considerate Christian neighbor.
Mr. Sunde was born in Gardner Ill. on March 30, 1895. He came here with his parents when he was one year of age and has lived here the remainder of his life. He was united in marriage to Emma Valen Mar. 20, 1912. To this union three children were born, Mrs. Ernest Quam of Graettinger, and Evelyn and Archie at home. He is also survived by three brothers Tom and Nels of Estherville and Rev. L.O. Lund [Sunde] of Colorado Springs, and a sister, Mrs. Carl Shaw of this city.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday at the home at 1:30 and at Palestine Lutheran Church at 2:00, the Rev. Olson officiating. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, July 29, 1948)
Thor Sunde, 63, Pioneer County Resident, Dies
Thor Sunde, 63, for 61 years a resident of Ellsworth township in Emmet county, died at 4:45 this morning in Park View clinic where he had been confined since July 20. Death was caused by a brain tumor. Mr. Sunde became ill in June of last year and on April 1 this spring underwent surgery at Rochester, Minn.One of nine children, Mr. Sunde was born on March 30, 1885, near Garner, Ill., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tollef Sunde. In 1887 the family moved to Ellsworth township to a farm more recently occupied by Thomas Sunde and presently by Elvin Sunde. Six years later the family moved across the section to another farm where Thor Sunde lived until his marriage to Emma Valen on March 20, 1912, and which two years later became their permanent home.
After two years on a farm one half mile north on Emmet county highway H, Mr. and Mrs. Sunde purchased his parents old home and had lived there since that time.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Sunde, and their three children, Mrs. Ernest Quam (Margaret) of Graettinger, and Evelyn and Archie of Estherville. Also surviving are three sisters and two brothers of Estherville, Mrs. Anfin Shaw, Mrs. Carl Shaw, Mrs. T.R. Olson, Tom Sunde and Nels Sunde, and a brother, Rev. L.O. Sunde of Colorado Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Saturday in the Sunde home east of Huntington and at 2 p.m. in the Palestine Lutheran church where Mr. Sunde was an active member. Rev. Russell Olson will officiate and burial will be in the Palestine Lutheran cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 29, 1948)
