Carl Sawyer Dies at 53; Rites Are Set
Harold Carl Sawyer, 53, well known and prominent farmer of the Wallingford and Estherville areas, died today at 4:45 a.m. at Holy Family Hospital after having been ill only about a week. Death was attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage suffered Sunday night at his home. He was brought to the hospital that night by ambulance.

Mr. Sawyer, who had lived in Emmet County since 1924, was an active worker in the community and county affairs. He was a member of the Christian Church and at the time of his death was an elder there, was president of the Estherville Cooperative Creamery board and was an active member of the Emmet County Farm Bureau, the B.P.O.E. and Knights of Pythias.

Born July 24, 1906 at Urbana in Benton County, Iowa, he was the son of the late Alva and Fern Sawyer. He received his education in the Urbana schools and came to Emmet County in June, 1924.

He was married on July 2, 1925 to Ruth Yates at Spirit Lake. Since their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer had farmed in Emmet County, at present on a farm near Wallingford.

Mr. Sawyer is survived by his wife, two sons, Verle and Harold, both of Estherville, and six grandchildren; also one sister, Mrs. Ed (Lela Belle) Shirley; and four brothers, Willard and Verdae, both of Estherville; Don of Spirit Lake and J.D. of Claremont, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marian Ruth, his parents, a brother, Purl, and a sister, Florine.

A family service is to be held Saturday morning at Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home, the Rev. Fred Sawyer, Des Moines, uncle of Mr. Sawyer, officiating. The body will then be taken to Oak Hill cemetery for burial. At 2 p.m. a memorial service for Mr. Sawyer will be held at the Christian Church for the public.

A memorial fund has been established.

Friends may call at the Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home from this evening until Saturday morning before the family service. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 27, 1959)
