Joseph W. Hurst Dies; Rites Monday
Joseph W. Hurst, 73, died at 12:30 a.m. today at his home. He had been ill for four years.Mr. Hurst was born near Webster City in 1886 [Per WW I Draft record January 8, 1886], the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hurst. He and his parents moved to Alden where he attended school.
Mr. Hurst worked for the Rock Island Railroad as depot agent at Sibley, Maple Hill and Cloverdale.
In 1912 he was married to Mabel C. Rice. They moved to Estherville in 1918, when Mr. Hurst began work in the Rock Island shop as a boilermaker helper. He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, Francis of Lake Nebagamon, Wisc., and Everett of Estherville and five grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister Mrs. Abbie Steward of Mason City and a brother Roy of Ventura, Cal.
His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.
Last rites will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Sternborg’s Chapel. The Rev. Lester Strubhar will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at Sternborg Funeral Home from Sunday noon until time of services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 30, 1959)
