George Groves Is Dead
George Elmer Groves, 83, died at 7:30 p.m. yesterday at the home of Mrs. Alma Shuttleworth, 615 North Fifth street, where he has made his home for the past 15 years.

In ill health for a number of years, he failed noticeably after the death of his brother, M.J. Groves on April 19 of this year. Death was attributed to old age and complications.

Born May 4, 1870, in Adair county, he was the youngest of 11 children of George and Clarissa Groves. Of Dutch and French ancestry, his parents came to Iowa from Virginia in pioneer days and settled on a farm in Adair county.

Mr. Groves came to Estherville about 50 years ago and was associated with his brother, M.J. Groves, in the Iowa National Fire Insurance company. He farmed and operated a number of businesses during his life. He and his brother were active in the Democratic party here for many years. Mr. Groves was affiliated with the Methodist church.

He is the last surviving member of his immediate family, his 10 brothers and sisters, parents and wife, the late Florence Harris [maiden name Cook] Groves, preceding him in death. A number of nephews and nieces survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Sternborg chapel, the Rev. Clyde Leeds officiating in the absence of the Rev. H. Hughes Dill. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 25, 1953)
