Obituary
Ruth Genora Ness was born near Cylinder, Iowa on March 16, 1914. On April 10th in that same years she was baptized in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. L.O. Wigdahl of Ruthven, who at that time served the St. Johns’ church near Cylinder. At the age of 14 she was confirmed in the Wallingford church by the Rev. Hanson, who then was the pastor of that congregation.

As a child 2 years old and in company with parents and brothers and sisters, Ruth Ness moved to the 12 Mile Lake township of Emmet county. That was in the spring of 1916. There she spent her girlhood days as she started and finished her eight grades in the Rural Public schools. She continued her schooling in the Estherville high school from which she graduated as a member of the class of 1931.

She also studied a semester in the Estherville junior college.

Miss Ness taught public school for three consecutive years. Her first school was held east of Wallingford, known as the Burr Oak school. Her second year was taught near Fenton, Iowa; she taught her last year in the 12 Mile Lake township in the schoolhouse known as the Rekow school. During the month of November last years she contracted the flu, from which she never recovered. This illness developed into tuberculosis. She passed away very quietly and apparently very peaceably at the Oakdale sanatorium at Oakdale, Iowa on Sunday, December 6, 1936. One of the very last words that she uttered in the presence of some of her closest relatives were these: “Tell mother I am going home to Jesus.”

When Ruth Ness closed her eyelids on last Sunday she had attained as her age: 22 years, 8 months and 20 days. She is survived by her parents: Mr. and Mrs. Iver Ness and by her two sisters, Mrs. I.G. Maaland and Mrs. Chester Anderson and also by many other relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral was held on Thursday, December 10, 1936. A brief service was held at the home in the 12 Mile Lake township. The service proper was held in the Riverside church at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. T. hanson of Lakefield, Minn. preached the main service. The Rev. Peder Nordsletten, the local pastor, had charge of the funeral and spoke also. Mr. Chas. Anderson of the Mahlum and Anderson undertaking firm of Estherville, Iowa, directed the funeral. A trio composed of Mr. Alfred Ness, Mr. Sherman Gunders and Mr. Edgar Iverson sang two numbers: “Some Day We’ll Understand,” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus.” Miss Lena Gunderson and Miss La Verna Olson were the pianists.

The following young men served as the pall-bearers: Norman Anderson, Lester Larson, Clarence Johnson, Norman Johnson, Conrad Johnson and Fred Hutchinson. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, December 17, 1936) (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, Deember 16, 1936)
