Estherville Man Killed in North Carolina Crash
Farmville, N.C. – An Estherville man was fatally injured in a one-car crash two miles east of Farmville, N.C., early today.Killed was Gary Eugene Petersen, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Petersen, Estherville. He had reportedly been in the Farmville area for the past two weeks working on construction.
Services for Mr. Petersen are pending at the Henry and Olson Funeral Home, Estherville.
Mr. Peterson, the driver of the car, was rounding a curve on Pit County road 1200 when his 1976 car went out of control, off the left side of the highway, travelled 300 feet and rolled over several times. He was thrown from the car, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
A passenger in the car, Steve Linn Lawman, received only minor injuries, according to authorities.
The accident was reported to authorities at 3 a.m. today. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 26, 1977)

Estherville – Services for Gary Eugene Petersen, 23, Estherville, were held 1:30 p.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stephen Wold officiating. Burial was in East Side Cemetery.Petersen was killed 3 a.m. Friday near Farmville, N.C., in an auto accident.
Born Aug. 11, 1954 at Estherville to Eugene and Bernice Mosloski Petersen, he graduated from Estherville High School in 1972. He was employed by Ibberson Construction Co., Minneapolis and had been working at Farmville the past three weeks.
He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Petersen, maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mosloski, Fairmont and several cousins. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 29, 1977)
