Walter Benton, cancer victim, dies at 67
Manly – Walter E. [Elmer] Benton, formerly of Manly, died of cancer at a Mason City hospital Thursday [November 19, 1959]. Born Dec. 22, 1891, at Armstrong, he was the son of Norman and Belle Benton.

Employed by the McDonald Engineering Co., Chicago, the last 36 years he had been at Egypt, Pa., the last year. He came here two years ago for surgery and had been back at work for a year. He was again brought here by plane three weeks ago.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel [Norris]; four daughters, Mrs. Art (Marie) Larson, Estherville; Mrs. Arden (Marion Virginia) Suby, Manly; Mrs. Leroy (Genevieve) Helmer and Mrs. Donald (Darlene) Portis, Mason City; a brother, Claude, Armstrong; 10 grandchildren, and a great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Bride’s Funeral Home with burial in Manly. (Mason City Globe Gazette, Mason, City, IA, November 20, 1959)
